Soil, Leaf & Water Analysis

The laboratory at Baileys is equipped to carry out soil, leaf and water tests to assist our clients in applying the correct fertilisers. Other tests, such as plant or animal pathogens, can also be conducted. All tests come with a written report including graphical presentations of results and recommendations. Tests require approximately 10-15 days turnaround time.

Soil Analysis

Our horticultural sales staff can collect soil samples from your property or you can use a clean garden trowel to send us approximately 1kg of topsoil in a clear plastic bag. Ensure samples are well labeled if you are taking more than one.

We test for pH, conductivity, phosphorous retention and organic matter to obtain an overview of the properties of the soil. All major nutrients are tested including Nitrogen, Phosphorous and Potassium (N,P and K). Sodium levels may indicate salinity and Calcium and Magnesium play an important role in determining soil structure. Trace elements are also tested for and our horticulturalists recommend fertiliser programs based on the interactions that can occur between nutrients in the soil.

Leaf Analysis

Further information on your crop or turf may be required from a leaf tissue sample. Failure to thrive is sometimes caused by a particular nutrient deficiency, or excess. These are easily identified through chemical analysis of the plant tissue. A better overview of your fertiliser program can be provided through both a soil and leaf analysis.

Water Analysis

Water from bores, lakes, dams or streams on your property may vary in quality throughout the year. To ensure you are not damaging your crops or garden with unsuitable water, a regular water test in recommended. Salinity and nutrient contamination will be identified earlier and can assist you in maintaining good horticultural practices.
